As a current participant or past graduate of the Institute for Leadership & Advocacy, service on a local government board or commission is an excellent way to involve yourself in the local government decision making process. These bodies exist for a variety of different functions and consist of local leaders who use their expertise to make or inform decisions that impact the larger community. These boards and commissions are often required to include individuals with specific backgrounds, and many require representation from the business sector or from the broader community in general. Selection usually entails an appointment process that involves elected officials. Selection for an opportunity can require consideration of the following: ·Residency in the jurisdiction ·Professional background ·Educational background ·Past community activity ·Availability for time commitment ·Potential conflicts of interest The Chamber has more information available on these opportunities on our Boards and Commissions webpage. Those interested are encouraged to explore what might be a good fit for them. The Chamber often receives requests from local government officials for nomination of qualified individuals to serve in these roles.
