Gas: Much like the summer NYMEX final monthly settlements, the October/November/December NYMEX all settled in a relatively tight range as seen below: October 2017 final NYMEX settlement = $2.974/MMBtu November 2017 final NYMEX settlement = $2.752/MMBtu December 2017 final NYMEX settlement = $3.074/MMBtu The good news for residential & commercial customers is that the historically volatile January NYMEX is currently trading under $2.80/MMBtu. Although we are in the midst of the typical withdrawal season regarding storage supplies, the Energy Information Administration (“EIA”) reported a highly unusual net injection into supplies for the week ending December 1st. Largely predicated on this short-term shift in the supply & demand spectrum, gas prices are down ~ $0.42 over the past 6 daily trading sessions. A stretch or two of colder than normal temperatures, however, can quickly alter the current bearish sentiment. Electric: It feels like winter has finally arrived in Ohio as temperatures have plummeted and the heavy coats are out. Even as we officially leave fall behind, we are not experiencing the same level of volatility in the electric market as has played out in the natural gas market. While we have seen day-to-day increases and decreases in pricing, competitive pricing is still widely available when compared to historic rates. 2018 on-peak wholesale power pricing has fluctuated within a few percent of where we where we were a year ago and still sits well below the three-year average. Market changes appear to be on the horizon with several pending regulatory directives. These changes will have an effect on the pricing available to consumers with the estimated impact still widely speculated by market experts. With a backward-dated market, longer-term pricing has continued to offer lower rates than short-term agreements. If you have an electric agreement expiring in 2018, now is the time to explore pricing and contract opportunities available to you.
