Today at 6:30 p.m., Perrysburg City Council will consider an ordinance that would make municipal code changes regarding temporary signs. Perrysburg City Council meetings take place at the Municipal Building at 201 West Indiana Avenue in Perrysburg. The modifications, which can be viewed here, are at the direction of the federal district court in response to litigation regarding Perrysburg’s signage requirements and include the following: • Within non-residential zoning, there would no longer be a one-sign limit for temporary wall or freestanding signs. The maximum allowable size for these signs would change from 18 to 48 total square feet. A permit would no longer be required. Also, the special category for these signs for events in this zoning would be eliminated. • Within residential zoning, the maximum allowable size for temporary freestanding signs or flags would change from 12 to 44 square feet. The special category for these signs and flags for events in this zoning would be eliminated. Also, the Toledo Plan Commission will hold a public hearing to review proposed updates to Toledo Municipal Code for such signs. The hearing will be on Thursday at 2:00 p.m. in Council Chambers in the lobby of One Government Center in downtown Toledo. Proposed changes include the following: • Prohibiting use of pennants, search lights, twirling signs, sandwich board signs, sidewalk or curb signs, balloons, air or gas filled figures, and feather flags. Currently, pennants are allowed under certain circumstances for six months. The others are currently allowed for opening of new businesses in commercial or industrial zoning for fifteen days, or for special civic or philanthropic events. • Banners and flags would no longer be allowed in residential districts for model home demos in a new subdivision conducted by a realtor. • The allowable time for use of flags and banners, which are permitted in regional commercial and industrial zoning, would change from six months to thirty consecutive days. Only one permit would be allowed per year per premise. Exemptions for temporary signage included in a separate section of Toledo code will remain unchanged. These include signage for elections/campaigns, real estate, special events at churches or schools, incidental signage such as “open signs”, and others. You can view a report with more information about these proposed changes here.
