Tony Packo’s®, Toledo’s most famous restaurant, is celebrating eighty-five years of serving up good food and lasting memories by offering their world-renowned hot dog at its original 1930s price of just five cents. Tony and Rose Packo opened the iconic eatery in 1932 on Toledo’s historic East Side with Hungarian recipes handed down to them from their families. With a flair for storytelling and old-world hospitality, they created a special place for locals to get a good meal at a good price during the Great Depression. Years later, in the 1970s, mentions of Packo’s on the TV series M*A*S*H would bring in visitors from all over the world to sample the food that Toledo actor Jamie Farr’s character Klinger raved about. Tony Packo Jr., commented, “It still thrills me to this day that we’ve been able to serve millions of people from all walks of life and from all over the globe. I credit that to our incredible staff and their dedication to the best customer service we can provide.” The Packo’s hot dog is, in fact, a traditional Hungarian smoked sausage called kolbasz. Tony Packo Sr. served it sliced in half lengthwise to provide a five-cent meal that his Depression-era guests could afford during those tough times. The sausage dog, topped with Rose’s unique chili sauce as well as mustard and onion, soon became the centerpiece of the Packo’s menu. It is served exactly the same way today. “We’re so excited to turn back time and offer our famous hot dog for just five cents !“ said Emily Bennett, Chairman and President of Tony Packo’s. “It’s our way of saying 'Thank You' to the community for supporting Packo’s for 85 years. This event kicks-off our Anniversary Celebration with even more exciting events taking place throughout the year. Many wonderful memories and traditions have been made at Packo’s and we are inviting anyone who would like share them with us to contact us at our email address, eat@tonypackos.com.” From March 27th through March 30th dine–in guests may add a Packo’s hot dog to their meal, one per visit, for a nickel, at all five Packo’s locations.
